Smith also used cash and cashiers’ checks to make substantial principal payments on the mortgages for vacation homes in North Carolina and Florida. In all, Smith diverted more than $430,000 from his tire business to his personal bank accounts and mortgages. In about August 2003, he also purchased a real estate lot in North Carolina near his vacation home with $68,100 in cash.

Tax Refunds to Enforce Health Insurance Mandate

Under the new Health care mandate, the IRS has authority to withhold a portion of your federal tax return if you can’t demonstrate that you have Health insurance coverage.
Starting in 2014, penalties for lacking qualifying coverage will range from $695 to 2.5% of your household income, whichever is greater. According to a recent Fox Business article, Steven T. Miller, IRS Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement, commented that the IRS can reduce a tax refund to collect the penalty.

Med Diversified Inc., a home health care company that was then publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange, he laundered $330,000 in funds that he had converted from Med Diversified in order to conceal the source of those funds.
